Trento Film Festival 2024

A kaleidoscopic image of the world's mountains

Cultural exhibitions and events

More than 40 venues are ready to welcome the 120 films and over 130 events in the 72nd Trento Film Festival, scheduled from 26 April to 5 May in Trento.

At the press conference at the Cinemino in Milan on 9 April, the President of Trento Film Festival, Mauro Leveghi made the announcement, together with CAI President General, Antonio Montani, the Festival Director, Luana Bisesti, and the film programme coordinator Mauro Gervasini. Elisabetta Bozzarelli, Councillor for Culture, was present to represent the Municipality of Trento, the Festival’s partner.

“For many years, Trento Film Festival was just the “Mountain Film Festival”. The title is perhaps a little simplistic, relic of an idealistic vision overcome in reality, and perhaps never truly in line with the spirit of the event. Indeed, from its early years the Festival was to go beyond the monolithic concept of mountains to be conquered in the name of a higher idea, whether progress or the fatherland” said President Mauro Leveghi. “Today, the true identity of the Festival can be summed up in two words, crystallized in the current subtitle: Mountains and Cultures. Both are in the plural because there are many mountains around the world, and we like to think the ways of seeing, experiencing and interpreting them are practically infinite. At this 72nd edition we will again attempt to express and offer space for this plurality, considering the Festival as a sort of kaleidoscope, through which each spectator makes up a picture of the whole, amazed at how every small change in the perspective can change the overall vision.”

The 72nd edition of Trento Film Festival thus promises to be extremely heterogeneous, offering a wealth of starting points for reflection, with Italian and international guests, such as the mountaineers Reinhold Messner, Tamara Lunger, Krzysztof Wielicki and Silvo Karo, the Iranian climber and civil rights activist Nasim Eshqui, climbing champion Stefano Ghisolfi, writers Mauro Corona, Arno Camenisch, Enrico Brizzi, Erri De Luca, Fosco Terzani and Matteo Righetto, the actor Veronica Pivetti, journalists Corrado Augias and Beppe Severgnini, the philosopher Umberto Galimberti, and explorers Alex Bellini, Tristan Gooley and Lorenzo Barone.

As anticipated in February, this year the very popular section Destination… will take the public to Ireland, a land of migration and breathtaking landscapes, to explore Irishness, in film, literature and obviously music, with Cisco from the Modena City Ramblers, who will play their hits from “Riportando tutto a casa”, thirty years after the album came out, in a dialogue with the radio journalist John Vignola.

The 2024 edition of the Festival thus intends to increasingly open itself up to different worlds and languages, also through new initiatives such as ‘Cincontri’Thirsting for the Infinite and Out-of-Town Adventures, renewing the content of consolidated formats such as The Joy of ReadingTime to AcclimatizeScience Clips, and including in the programme popular excursions in the area with Trekking Stories.

Various masterclasses have been scheduled, from a workshop dedicated to Hayao Miyazaki’s animation on the 50th anniversary of Heidi, to a class with Massimiliano Nocera, set designer for Le otto montagne, also including a workshop with Ludovica Basso, known as Clorophilla, the creator of the official poster for this edition.

There will be plenty of proposals in T4Future, the section of the Festival dedicated to the younger generation: a programme of screenings, workshops and activities designed to encourage visual language education and promote issues linked to sustainable development, environmental protection and active citizenship, in cooperation with various players in the local area. The participants will include Davide Baldoni, who graduated from the Accademia Disney and has been an illustrator for the Topolino comic since 1999, and director Enzo d’Alò, who will present his latest animated feature film, Mary e lo spirito di mezzanotte.
