Opera Season 2016 - 2017

OPER.A 20.21

Love and other Cruelties

Drama

“The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return”

This quotation from the Moulin Rouge by Baz Luhrmanns (2001), which is a combination of opera, musical and cinematic arts, conveys an important message: love is the greatest thing, the most divine thing that can happen to all of us. At the same time it's also the most painful and terrible feeling which we must (learn to) deal with. Love is cause of pain, anger, folly, hatred, death.

Also in the past edition, THE IRONY OF LIFE, love was a central theme, and the season 2016/2017 draws again our attention to it.

Getting closer to Christmas, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, is a one-singer opera by composer Iain Bell which was performed with great success for the first time in 2014 at the Houston Grand Opera. It depicts love as strength of feelings, and affection for our neighbour as an essential element for a sound society; it proves an effective and urgent appeal to humanity.

Another masterpiece of the twenty-first century, Quartett by Luca Francesconi, was put on stage for the first time in 2011 at La Scala in Milan. Here, the composer recounts in 13 scenes the brutal battle between two lovers, the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont.
