We all know Charles R. Darwin. We all think we know him. We all remember him with a white beard, old and absorbed, leaning on his porch at Down House. Otherwise, we remember him young, curious and seasick on his planetary voyage on the Beagle. But what is really interesting about his story lies just that-in the middle. 

Darwin's lesser-known story is the “middle Darwin,” between the voyage of the Beagle and the publication of On the Origin of Species, a theatrical story in itself. It is a story of humanity, humanity in science, weaknesses, fears, uncertainties, even cowardice, and even a bit of comedy…
