Kind of Miles

After the extraordinary success with Stefano Massini and his “Mein Kampf,” the Teatro Sociale Season continues with “kind of Miles,” Paolo Fresu's play dedicated to Miles Davis.
Produced by the Teatro Stabile of Bolzano, and directed by Andrea Bernard - who was recently awarded the Abbiati Prize for directing Giuseppe Verdi's Don Carlo -, the show sees Fresu joined on stage by musicians such as Bebo Ferra, Christian Meyer, Dino Rubino, Federico Malaman, Filippo Vignato, Marco Bardoscia and Stefano Bagnoli.
“Kind of Miles” joins Fresu's story dedicated to Miles Davis, one of the most eccentric and influential personalities in recent history, with a musical journey that aims to reconstruct the life and music of an artist who marked the 20th century through his sound universe and his artistic and human relationships.
"Miles taught us to always move forward. I believe that at this moment in history, beyond aesthetics, there is a compelling need to see beyond things. Perhaps it will be vision, poetry and courage that will give us the chance to save the planet", states Fresu.
The narrative of Fresu, who also signs the dramaturgy, is punctuated by personal moments of life - especially his jazz apprenticeship at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s - and thrives on the constant dialogue between original musical pieces composed and performed by him together with Bebo Ferra (electric guitar) Christian Meyer (drums), Dino Rubino (piano and Fender Rhodes), Federico Malaman (electric bass), Filippo Vignato (trombone, multi-effects, synth), Marco Bardoscia (double bass) and Stefano Bagnoli (drums), and the suggestions of video projections.
A musical lineup of choice, consisting of different personalities and different instruments, acoustic and electric, that highlights the recording and live journey of the “Prince of darkness” in terms of sound and research.
The stage box that houses the artists is inhabited by the visuals of Marco Usuelli and Alexandre Cayuela: a visual project with a deeply contemporary language that is intertwined with storytelling and music. Following the experimental nature and tension for research that has always distinguished Davis, technology becomes part of the performance, interacting with the images (thanks to a collaboration with the Department of Engineering of the Free University of Bolzano).
The lighting design is by Marco Alba, the original costumes, evoking the 1970s, are by Elena Beccaro.
Accompanying the performance will be Ēkhō, an immersive installation created by the Theatre of Bolzano in collaboration with the Municipality of Bolzano, which, thanks to technology pioneered by the Department of Engineering of the Free University of Bolzano and the new media artists of “kind of Miles” Marco Usuelli and Alexandre Cayuela will allow the audience to visualize the reactions that a piece of music produces on the listener.
