Remembering Shostakovich

Luca Provenzani, cello - Fabiana Barbini, piano
Music by Brahms, Shostakovich
The 50th anniversary of what is probably the greatest Soviet composer of the 20th century falls in 2025: Dimitri Shostakovich
Author of an endless output, head of the Soviet composers' society for long decades, but nevertheless always in an ambiguous situation vis-à-vis political power, now friendly to him, now hostile, he also oscillated in his writing between a very hard and experimental style (especially in the early years) and its melodic and “elegiac” opposite (as he liked to call himself).
Rounding out the program is another masterpiece, this time from the 19th century, Brahms's First Sonata, also poised between the most expressive and intense romanticism, and an explicit homage to Bach's Art of Fugue
The performers are Fabiana Barbini on piano and Luca Provenzani on cello, a well-established and talented duo of musicians from Tuscany with a brilliant national and international career.
