Tullio De Piscopo

The personality and refinement of Tuliio De Piscopo's sound influence sixty years of music history, from his first records to collaborations with big names, from Astor Piazzolla to Chet Baker, from Max Roach to Gerry Mulligan, and innovative solo productions.
He became the leader and interpreter of the Mediterranean sound, which he transferred with love and passion to the music of his 'brother in blues' Pino Daniele.
Tullio De Piscopo's sound crossed the borders of the 'Bel Paese', to America, to Africa…
Not everyone knows about his historic collaboration with Maestro Astor Piazzolla, with whom he produced no less than 11 LPs, creating and spreading the sound of the Tango Nuevo, magnificently summarised in the famous composition 'Libertango', a song still performed today in all the great theatres around the world.
And then collaborations with the greats of Italian music, Mina, Fabrizio De André, Franco Battiato, Enzo Jannacci, Giorgio Gaber, Adriano Celentano, Ornella Vanoni, Milva.
And more... great concerts and timeless recordings with John Lewis, Don Costa, Wayne Shorter, Bob James, Eumir Deodato, Quincy Jones, Kay Windings, Lester Bowie, Bob Berg, Alphonso Johnson, Billy Cobham.
He currently teaches drums at the Nuova Accademia di Musica Moderna in Milan.
So, this concert wants to represent a bit of all this.
The project is a sort of journey through the history of Tullio De Piscopo, starting from Naples to New York, where on 14 July '98 at the Blue Note, on the occasion of the world premiere of Count Basie Orchestra, the cultural commission of Windtel Communication unanimously decided to award him the Lifetime Achievement Award, as he was recognised as the most authoritative exponent of Italian jazz music in the world.
This musical journey will proceed through pieces dedicated to Pino Daniele, great historical drum solos, and pieces by Charles Mingus, Elvin Jones, and Duke Ellington. It will then continue with highly successful pieces such as Stop Bajon and Andamento Lento, with which Tullio De Piscopo dominated the world charts.
