71st Trento Film Festival: Lorenzo Mattotti creates the poster

The kermesse, scheduled in Trento from 28 April to 7 May, will be dedicated to Ethiopia

Another leading name in the world of illustration joins the by now long list of artists who have created a poster for the Trento Film Festival: Lorenzo Mattotti, distinctive artist whose artistic universe now ranges continuously between comics, painting, illustration, and animation cinema. The snowy mountains, green meadows, and azure sky of Mattotti’s work will represent the spirit of a Festival which, having celebrated its seventieth anniversary in 2022, will return to animate the cinemas, squares, and many other places in Trento from April 28 to May 7, 2023.

“With the Poster of this 71st edition it can be said that a sort of trilogy comes to an end, which began with Gianluigi Toccafondo and then continued, in the 70th year, with Milo Manara. A trilogy of works by great Italian artists, who – each with their own style and poetics – have placed the complex relationship between man and nature front and center” explains the President of the Trento Film Festival Mauro Leveghi. “After the wolf of Toccafondo howling at the moon and perhaps speaking to man, and the Ondina of Manara, enclosed in her mythological and fairy-tale world, looking with distrust at the humanity threatening her, Mattotti seems to offer us a conciliatory vision pacified by the presence of man in the mountains. The proportions clarify the roles, the colors suggest the possibility of balance, the lines seem to indicate that there may be many paths towards the future, but that humanity’s journey, to quote Alex Langer, must be slower, deeper, and sweeter than it has been up to now.”

“We are honored to have been able to collaborate with Lorenzo Mattotti, an author whose artistic trajectory has intertwined with the world of cinema many times, up to the creation of the poster for the 79th Venice Film Festival last September. We like to recall proudly that the Trento Film Festival is the second longest-running film festival in Italy, second only to Venice, so it is one of those coincidences that Jung would have defined as significant, full of symbolic meanings and strong emotions” says the Director of the Festival, Luana Bisesti. “We finished the 70th year just over a month ago: a year-long edition, and more, considering that the Scalare il tempo exhibitionis still open at Le Gallerie, and that there on March 10 we will present the book produced in collaboration with the Fondazione Museo Storico del Trentino. But our path certainly does not end here, and we are ready to fill Trento with screenings, literary presentations, workshops for girls and boys, and mountaineering evenings; all engagements with a high level of originality, which is the most significant feature of the Trento Film Festival, which has always been creating, experimenting, and innovating formats and contents.”

To allow the public to “acclimate” to the high altitudes of the 2023 edition of the Trento Film Festival, the classic Avvicinamenti meetups are back, which this year from March 6 to April 4 will alternate between cinema and literature and whose program will be communicated in the coming weeks.

The dates of the Bolzano edition have also been revealed, confirmed in its spring location from June 5th to the 10th thanks to the collaboration with the Province and the Municipality of Bolzano, in the context of which the Natura Short Film Contest begins again, a short film competition organized by the BeYoung association.
