1915-1918. Alpini at War

Curated by Franco Grones and by the municipality of Villa Lagarina

exhibition
Mostra - 1915-1918. Alpini in guerra (e non solo loro) [ Comune di Villa Lagarina]

This exhibition is part of the celebrations to commemorate the Centenary of the end of the First World War - Trentino Grande Guerra.

An exhibition of photographs, postcards, medals, friezes, cartography and lead figures by Franco Grones.

The Alpine at War exhibition is a brief account of the Alpini Units’ participation in the Great War. This ranges from the greatest battles ever fought on the glaciers – Adamello and Marmolada – to the bitter clashes on the Dolomite Front, on the Plateaus and also before on the mountains beyond the Karst (Mrizli Krn).

Franco Grones has used reproductions of period photographs from books and the web, as well as postcards, medals, friezes, maps and, as a connecting link, lead figures cast by the author.

The exhibition narrates with precise dates, where possible, military operations and everyday events.

In the first instance, for example, the moment when the first soldier is killed in the Great War is reconstructed. It was the Alpino Roberto Giusto of the Cividale Alpini Battalion who fell at Passo di Zagordan on May 24 1915, after being struck by a bullet. Among the many pieces is that of Paolo Monelli, Alpini Ski Battalion officer and author of Scarpe al sole. Also, Lieutenant Nino Calvi and Angiolino Schiochet, who was called "el diaol" for his achievements in the Dolomites, and Vittorio Facchin, who wrested the summit of Tofana di Rozès from the Kaiserjäger. But there are also less "warlike" episodes, such as transporting the injured by sled or a peculiar Alpino with his Bianchi bicycle. Also, a member of the Czechoslovak Legion in Italy, dressed as an Alpino. Then there are the guards who stood at 40°C below zero and the more fortunate ones at more accessible, yet still polar, temperatures. And many, many other figures.
