Christmas in trenches
The Great War told through letters from the front, woodcuts, paintings and selected pages of the Domenica del Corriere.

First-hand witness accounts reveal how Christmas was experienced at the front: the modest celebrations, the words dedicated to loved ones, the heroic deeds of the soldiers.
Against the setting of Trentino, Friuli and Veneto’s mountains, the faces and stories of the soldiers emerge. The documents come from the rich private collection of Franco Pivetti, historical director of the Casa degli Artisti in Tenno.
The exhibition retells a conflict from before the internet and television age, when few press outlets existed to inform families about the lives of their loved ones at the front. An era in which history reached Italian homes via an artist’s pencil, that of Achille Beltrame, famous illustrator of the Domenica del Corriere, whose covers conveyed the human, military, social and strategic events of the war. The exhibition is an opportunity to admire some of his most beautiful and important covers published during the Great War.
