Cultural frontiers in the Alps: the case of Trentino-Tyrol

Meetings and conferences

Giovanni Kezich, Director of the Museo degli Usi e Costumi della Gente Trentina (Trentino Folklife Museum), talks about "Cultural frontiers in the Alps: the case of Trentino-Tyrol": around 1957, a very exclusive social science laboratory at Columbia University was the starting point for research that would relaunch the themes of social anthropology in the Alpine region. Published in 1974 under the title "The Hidden Frontier. Ethnology and Ethnicity in an Alpine Valley", the research by Eric R. Wolf and his younger student John W. Cole is still today a basic reference point for those who, in the specific context of the Alps, i.e. in Robert Hertz's "merveilleux conservatoire", want to evaluate the various forces of ecology, ethnicity and history in the field.

The conference is part of the series of webinars "Mountain Peoples' Cultures in a Comparative Perspective" that will take place from May to December, organised by the Department of Education Sciences of the University of Bolzano and by MFEA-The Malinowski Forum for Ethnography and Anthropology (unibz), in collaboration with Associazione Antropologica Alto Adige (Anthropological Association South Tyrol), Trentino Folklife Museum, and Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Bolzano.

The meetings explore the possibility of linking the socio-cultural experiences of people living in different mountain areas, both in the Alps and outside Europe. The speakers at the conference will present and discuss their research on anthropological, historical and geographical aspects of the different cultures of mountain peoples, reflecting on the value of the comparative perspective and discussing these themes with the audience.
