Festen - The Truth Game
Festen represents a great challenge with a text that in Europe is considered a classic, while in Italy it is being staged for the first time.
Script of the Danish film directed in 1998 by 2021 Academy Award winner Thomas Vinterberg, it is the first work to adhere to the Dogme 95 manifesto and won the Grand Jury Prize at the 51st Cannes Film Festival (at the time presided over by Martin Scorsese).
Helge, a respected businessman and family patriarch, is celebrating his 60th birthday at the family-run hotel. Gathered together are also his sons Christian, Michael and his daughter Helene.
At Helge's birthday dinner, Christian makes a toast to his father. This is the turning point, as it changes the balance of the family forever.
The play delves into the most uncomfortable taboos, dealing with our relationship with the father figure, the truth, the relationship with power and imposed authority. It is impossible not to think of Hamlet, of the Greek tragedy, but also of the fairy-tale universe of the Grimm Brothers. Who could possibly try to overthrow the world of our fathers?
