Flints, glacial wrecks and simulated excavations: a plunge into the Ice Age with Ice Age Europe Day 2022

Meetings and conferences

Bringing to life a glimpse into the lives of our prehistoric ancestors: that's the idea behind Ice Age Europe Day, the event dedicated to the Ice Age that will enliven the Giardino botanico alpino | The Alpine botanic garden on Monte Bondone (a  satellite museum of the MUSE - Science Museum of Trento) on Sunday 18 September 2022, with walks, simulated excavations and Paleolithic workshops, an exciting step-by-step journey on the trail of the Ice Age. For the occasion, admission to the Botanical Garden is free, activities cost € 3.

Thousands of years ago, in glacial times, hunter-gatherer populations penetrated the alpine zone during periods with a milder climate. Indeed, around the bog, at an altitude of 1,570 meters, traces of the camps have been found, and along the ridges leading toward the Three Peaks, numerous ceramic and chipped flint artifacts have been recovered. A step-by-step tour will take visitors to explore the 10 hectares of the Alpine Botanical Garden, one of the oldest and largest in the Alps, and discover many interesting facts about our Paleolithic ancestors and the natural world that surrounded them. New this year a simulated excavation-a chance to step into the shoes of an archaeologist and hunt for ancient treasures.

"Ice Age Europe", the international day dedicated to the popularization of science on ice age-related issues, is promoted by museums, archaeological sites and research centers across Europe, which share membership in the Ice Age network.
