The war is over. The Empire has lost a million men, Vienna has become the capital of an area which is ten times smaller, and a millennial monarchy has almost ceased to exist. The terms imposed by the victors, however, far from establishing a just and lasting peace, nourish political and economic instability, destined to ruinously overwhelm Europe in the short span of two decades.
