Italian Journey 19th-Century Landscapes from the Macchiaioli to the Symbolists: UNTIL 2 SEPTEMBER!

Curated by Alessandra Tiddia

exhibition , Art exhibition

The landscapes of Italy, a favourite destination for European travellers venturing off on the traditional Grand Tour, are featured in this exhibition dedicated to nineteenth-century painting

The exhibition covers a century of efforts to capture the landscape and its effects of light and colour: from the Posillipo School of southern Italy to the Symbolist “landscapes of the soul” presented in the early editions of the Venice Biennale, passing by way of the fundamentally important and innovative expressions of the Tuscan Macchiaioli

The technological developments characterizing the 19th century, such as photography and the possibility of viewing the world from novel vantage points (bird’s-eye views from hot air balloons being one example), and changing sensibilities marked a transition in the concept of landscape painting from a simple veduta to a more complex and evocative vision
The exhibition includes works by BezziCiardiDe NittisFattoriFragiacomoGiganteLega, and Signorini.
