The Calligraphic Mark as Work of Art

Writing as a pictorial form assumed a prominent position in the art of the 20th century. Relations between artists and poets, intermixing of idioms, the stratification of images and words all intensified in the latter half of the century.
Among works of art, posters, artist’s editions, and archival documents, the exhibition explores the aesthetic use of the calligraphic mark across fifty years of art: from the pictorial experiences of Gastone Novelli and Achille Perilli to the painted alphabets of Carla Accardi, Giuseppe Capogrossi, and Antonio Sanfilippo, all the way to the verbo-visual quests of artists such as Ugo Carrega and Ben Vautier.
