Memory and history. Between recovering the past and understanding the present

Meetings and conferences , Book presentation

The European twentieth century is marked by wars, genocides, deportations, traumas of families or of entire communities, natural catastrophes: these events are being remembered, recounted, transmitted by individuals or social groups.

How and under what conditions do these memories become history? Through what mechanisms do communities process traumas?

Which events become the historical heritage of a nation, which others are destined to be forgotten? Which memories and stories are to be saved and how are they to be passed on to new generations? Does a national public memory exis, or are we still faced with unshared memories?

We will talk about all this and much more with Gabriella Gribaudi and Filippo Focardi, starting from their books (Gabriella Gribaudi,  La memoria, i traumi, la storia, La guerra e le catastrofi del Novecento, Viella, 2020. Filippo Focardi, Nel cantiere della memoria. Fascism, Resistance, Shoah, Foibe, Viella 2020)
