Sacred Baroque: Responsoria four voices and basso continuo, by Leonardo Leo (1694-1744)

Vocal group Nova Ars Cantandi, director Giovanni Acciai

Music

Due to an indisposition of a musician of the group, instead of the sacred repertoire of Giovanni Legrenzi, the concert will be entirely dedicated to the Responsoria, four voices and basso continuo, by Leonardo Leo (1694-1744). Author of serenades and pastoral music, dramas for music and sacred oratorios, Leonardo Leo was one of the greatest exponents of the Neapolitan musical school, a movement which, with Alessandro Scarlatti, Nicola Porpora, Francesco Durante and Francesco Feo, left a deep mark on the history of music. It’s also testimony on how Naples was a musical centre of excellence and the beating heart of the cultural life, not only Italian, of that period.

Presented on this occasion almost three centuries after their creation, the Responsoria of the Divine Office belong to the most solemn period of the Roman liturgy, the Holy Week.
