Who am I?
This is what Fausto De Stefani seems to have asked himself fearlessly all of his life.
The answer is easy, we might say: Fausto De Stefani is the second Italian mountaineer and sixth in the world to have climbed all 14 eight-thousanders. So it goes without saying: Fausto de Stefani is a mountaineer. Better: one of the strongest mountaineers in the world. But that would be the wrong answer.
Fausto would never call himself that. If anything, mountaineering has helped and pushed him to ask himself with more intensity and precision the same question: who am I?
It is not so much the ventures that define him, it is not so much what he did in the mountains, but rather how he did it. Fausto always looked at the mountains as a means, never as an end. A means to get to know the world, and himself.
Fausto's story goes far beyond the boundaries of the mountains. He speaks to the imagination and the ability to dream of the child that dwells in each of us. And he speaks to the adults we are or will become, who struggle to find meaning in our actions and in our lives.
