Towards the Russian front

Photographs and impressions by Aldo Salvadei 1941-1942

exhibition

This exhibition presents a selection of photographs by Aldo Salvadei, a second lieutenant medic responsible for transporting the wounded from the Russian Front during the Second World War.

The pictures provide a cross section of two trips to the front between summer 1941 and winter 1942. On board hospital train No. 7, Salvadei never reached the front line but he travelled widely, photographing rural landscapes, towns in the rear, peasant homes and bombed villages. On his journey he met peasants,  civilians and also Russian prisoners, examining them with a curious yet never banal eye.

Also on display is the Italian Red Cross mod. 1908 volunteer uniform which belonged to Antonietta Gerola, donated by the Provincia autonoma di Trento’s Inspectorate of Voluntary Nurses of the Italian Red Cross.
