“Oltre il limite. Viaggio ai confine della conoscenza” (Beyond the limit. A journey to the frontiers of knowledge) is the first major exhibition to be hosted by the MUSE Science Museum in Trento. Sponsored by the MUSE and the Italian Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), in collaboration with the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the University of Trento, the theme of the exhibition is the limit.

Interactive exhibits, installations, videos and multimedia experiences will accompany visitors as they venture out to discover the universe and its mysteries. The exhibition explores different themes, reflecting the multi-disciplinary approach adopted by the MUSE: the big bang and the expansion of the universe, the infinitely small and the infinitely big, the relationship between energy, matter and temperature, anti-matter, the limits of the mind and of scientific technology, the nature of time and lots more besides.

Meetings, conferences and workshops will offer visitors further opportunities to explore the limits of perceived and imagined reality, technology, the mind and senses. The entire museum experience is clearly centred on the concept of “limit”: this is seen not as an impassable wall, but rather as an irresistible spur to go forward, like Ulysses, towards a horizon that moves a bit further away with each step we take. The only constant is the profoundly human desire to go one step further, explore the frontier using the tools we have, find new answers or, as is more frequently the case, new questions.

“Beyond the Limit” is a multi-sensory journey to explore the known and the unknown, where the boundaries between science, philosophy and art, and between physics and metaphysics disappear. Likewise, as we explore the infinitely small, the barriers between time, mass and energy, and between the observer and the observed fall down: these are the intriguing paradoxes of quantum mechanics, one of the topics covered by the exhibition.
Our knowledge of the universe is limited, and each new discovery is a launching pad for new investigations, the outcomes of which are uncertain. What has no limits is our imagination.

The “Beyond the Limit” exhibition lets us zoom in on the frontiers, which are invisible yet crucial for our lives, making it possible for us to imagine faraway worlds that only physics and science have been able to explore. The exhibition consists of numerous interactive video installations designed to allow visitors to experience the limit and the extremes of physics. It will also address the issue of going beyond the limit in terms of other challenges in the fields of technology and sport, and in the areas of art, philosophy and religion.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of meetings with Italian scientists as well as sports champions, artists and thinkers who will put forward their views on the significance for man of confronting an ancient yet constantly changing limit.

Visits, activities, events & more…
Besides guided tours to the exhibition, many different activities and events are offered in the next months: science shows, conferences, workshops, solar system themed projections, planetarium observation, dance shows, sleepover at the museum.
