Stava: 19 July 1985

30 years after the tragedy of the Stava valley, this exhibition at the seat of the European Parliament in Strasbourg pays homage to 268 innocent victims

Since the report by the European Commission presented on 2nd June 2003 stated that: “the
main reason for concern at a worldwide level is the failure of earth structures containing
mining waste”, it is natural for the European Parliament to have approved the proposal to host the travelling exhibition on the Stava Valley industrial and environmental disaster as a tribute to the memory of the 268 victims of that catastrophic event, put forward by Honourable Herbert Dorfmann – member of the European Parliament elected in the Italian constituency including also the Trentino-Südtirol Autonomous Region, the Trento Autonomous Province and
the Municipality of Tesero, where the Stava Valley disaster occurred. Moreover, this exhibition
intends to focus the attention and awareness of all member States on the problem of safe
construction and management of tailings dams.

This exhibition, organized by the Stava 1985 Foundation (Registered Charity) with the support
of Trento Autonomous Province, will be open from Monday the 6th to Friday the 10th July 2015 in the Espace Emilio Colombo at the seat of the European Parliament in Allée du
Printemps in Strasbourg. The presentation will take place on Tuesday 7th July 2015 at 6 p.m.

This travelling exhibition is part of the celebrations of the 30th anniversary of the Stava Valley catastrophe organized by the Stava 1985 Foundation, the Trentino-Südtirol Autonomous
Region, the Trento Autonomous Province and the Municipality of Tesero. It will be set up also
in Trento at the headquarters of the Council of the Trentino-Südtirol Autonomous Region and
in Rome at the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament.
