Perfect storm

Cultural exhibitions and events

“You cannot think that something is never going to happen just because it has never happened in the past.”

Nassim Nicholas Taleb

In medical language the term “crisis” denotes the acutest moment during an illness, which will be followed either by an improvement or by a deterioration in the patient’s state of health. Its etymological root, on the other hand, identifies an act of “comprehension”, “judgement/opinion” and “choice”. In both cases, the meaning refers to a state of changeover and transformation.

In the contemporary era the concept of “crisis” has been assuming an all-absorbing and permanent feature. The economic, cultural and social crisis we are going through is not perceived as a temporary state of being or as a phase to overcome. On the contrary, it is perceived as an “endless storm”, a pouring rain that sweeps away everything in its way, whose effects are still unknown, but definitely catastrophic.

From climate change to the collapse of economic systems, from wars to global migration flows, nothing seems to hold out against the ongoing dissolution. Perfect Storm is an expression used by scientists for identifying that combination of demographic, environmental, social and historical factors that will bring us to a point of no return by 2030, determining the metamorphosis of an age.

What if there were new possibilities and alternative opportunities hidden within the crisis itself? What if fresh benefits may arise from the chaos, in the exact moment when the effort is not exclusively concentrated on the creation of stability and certainties for contrasting adverse happenings but, instead, on the pursuit of new occasions of progress and development?

The “Perfect Storm”, the greatest one since the post-war period, may be overcome simply by learning how to catch and surf the right wave, having recourse to the right and necessary equipment for sailing in the open water of the - irreversible -  ongoing change itself. The culture – considered as heritage, history, innovation, critical faculty and faith in knowledge – may represent a rudder, able to show us the possible routes.

Welcome to the 2016 edition of Pergine Spettacolo Aperto: an artistic adventure experienced through the impetuous waves of the present.

HISTORY

Pergine Spettacolo Aperto over the last  forty years has become one of the most important cultural appointments held during the summer in Trentino. This is a manifestation deeply connected with its host village that has been acquiring a dimension even more international, settling in a European network of same-field operators and volunteering as a holder of creative experimentation and of contemporary artistic production, often related to uncomfortable themes. In recent years the majority of the formula that has been adopted concerns an alternation of the classical scheme, involving a “frontal” fruition of the show. The audience is not a simple spectator anymore, on the contrary, it actively participates in the event ‘s realization, determining its course of action, occupying spaces and taking part in the decisional aspects.

In these premises the festival itself assumes a connotation of “experience” in the first place, that involves individuals and turns them into protagonists.
