History of the Val Meledrio Ecomuseum in Dimaro

Since ancient times the communities of Dimaro and Carciato, together with other local communities in Val di Sole developed a flourishing and autonomous industry in the production of limestone and also in the production of other local products.

According to reliable sources, just in the town of Dimaro, during the 16th century, there were 28 functioning huge mallets, most of these were located right in Val Meledrio.

Therefore, we can truly consider this a trade of forestry resources, the production of charcoaliron and limestone, a business developed by and intertwined with the local urban communities and the nearby regions.

Baking limestone to produce lime rapidly declined during the last half of the nineteenth century due to new pre-industrial ovens and the use of new building materials.

The ecomuseum route in Val Meledrio

The route begins at the 16th century CHURCH (A) with its unique bell-tower, in the centre of the town of Dimaro.

Proceeding along the road beside the Meledrio stream (Boschetto di Dimaro) you will reach the SEGHERIA VENEZIANA (THE SAWMILL) (B) located at the very beginning of the town on the road when coming down from Folgarida.

From here it is possible to follow the route known as THE TREMENTINA (wood turpentine) TRAIL (C); you can also continue with a mountain bike and then onto the FOSINACE (forge) (D) where iron-work took place, a main source of income in the medieval era.

Here we can find THE MALLET (E) which has been perfectly restored and a lovely picnic area.

From here we can follow the route towards the CALCARA (F) a lime kiln used to produce limestone.

Further along the route you will reach the DOS DI SANTA BRIGIDA (G), where, after extensive research, the remains of an ancient hospice, run by the monks for travellers and pilgrims passing through the area, were found.
