Covering more than 10 hectares, the Alpine Botanic Garden of Viote di Monte Bondone sits at the heart of one of the most enchanting and scenic mountain areas of the Trento surroundings.
Among the first examples of Alpine botanic gardens in Italy, the Garden was established in 1938 as a joint program between the Tridentine Museum (then “Museo di Storia Naturale della Venezia Tridentina”) and the Society of Tridentine Alpinists (SAT – Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini).
The Botanic Garden is located at an altitude of 1,540 meters above sea level. It grows over 1,000 Alpine species, grouped by large geographic area of origin (as an example, the Eurasiatic area includes species from the Pyrenees, the Alps, the Apennines, the Balkans, the Carpathians, the Caucasus and other mountain ranges in Europe and Asia). These species represent a valuable living account of the flora biodiversity in the Alpine environment.
Also, a seed bank was created at the Garden to conserve seeds of endangered plant species. The bank is available for exchange and research to the International network of botanic gardens, and a list of the seeds (Delectus seminum) is periodically published.
In July and August, the Garden carries out a wide variety of learning and fun activities dedicated to the public, particularly to children and families.
