Mountain dairy museum - Caderzone

A museum dedicated to the activities of mountain pasturage with a collection of interesting objects from the Giudicarie area. Milking and the processing of butter, cheese and ricotta are demonstrated through the various kinds of equipment used. The visit concludes with a room where the objects necessary for life at the mountain dairy are on display.

The ‘Malga' (Mountain Dairy) Museum in Caderzone illustrates the life in an Alpine summer pasture and collects various instruments improved through time and experience to manufacture milk and its by-products. Located on the ground floor of the former stables of the Lodron-Bertelli district, it was founded to celebrate the identity of the numerous generations who lived and worked in this valley. Inside the three halls the items are arranged in a precise logical order: the first dedicated to pasture, to milking, to the dairy; the second to dairy work and to milk products, the third to the everyday-life of pastoral man.
The museum offers exclusively original items collected in various Alpine summer pastures and mountain dairies of the valleys of Rendena and Giudicarie. The sober, almost plain articles have been created by hands more concerned with down-to-earthness than with appearance. Yet they are quite amazing in their bareness.
The Lodron Bertelli Palazzo still offers the admirable age-old architecture of the façade, as well as the austere entrance hall - which opens out onto the square - the monumental main staircase on the first floor, the hall of stuccoes and another hall with wooden ceiling. Worth visiting is the marvellous chapel of the counts and the solemn portal of Marcantonio. The palazzo is located in piazza Sant'Antonio, in the old town-centre of Caderzone.
