Until 5 November: An Eternal Beauty

The Classical Canon in Early 20th-century Italian Art

exhibition

A major exhibition dedicated to one of the peak moments in twentieth-century Italian art comes to Mart Rovereto. In collaboration with Fundación MAPFRE, Madrid. The return-to-order climate in Europe devastated by the First World War brought forth artistic ventures and movements – Metaphysical art, the experiences surrounding "Valori plastici", the Novecento Italiano, and the poetics of Magical Realism – that sought to recover and reaffirm themes and formal solutions from the artistic tradition. Allegorical subjects, portraits, figures, landscapes and still-lifes were interpreted in a new idiom providing a modern rendition of the values of ancient and Renaissance art. Technical knowledge gained the status of a tool for representing and transfiguring the real in search of a timeless, oneiric dimension.

Featuring absolute masterpieces from the early twentieth century, An Eternal Beauty traces an itinerary among the works of the masters of Italian art who looked to the past and its classic canon as sources of inspiration. The exhibition is organized into seven sections: Metaphysics of time and spaceEvoking the ancientReturn to the figure: the portraitThe Nude as ModelLandscapes; The Poetry of ObjectsThe Seasons of Life. It presents over one hundred works by some of the major protagonists of Italian art: CarràCasoratiDe ChiricoDe PisisSavinioSeveriniSironi as well as BucciCagnaccioDonghiDudrevilleFuniMalerbaMariniMartiniMarussigOppi and Wildt.
