Angelo Filomeno

exhibition

Italian by birth and American by adoption, Angelo Filomeno (1963) combines the skilful technique of embroidery with references to classicist painting and the ancient tradition of the wondrous (bestiaries, mythological narratives, fantastic worlds).  Filomeno's research is fuelled by dichotomies: the sophisticated technique, the preciousness of the materials, and the cultural references in his works stand in contrast to the subject.  Linen, silk, onyx and crystals appear at odds with his macabre images of skulls, skeletons, insects and human body parts. These paradoxes in Filomeno's works leave the viewer with a bittersweet taste, determined by the contradiction of vanity and caught between the fear of catastrophe and the search for pleasure.
