For Darwin Day 2021, the MUSE - Museo delle Scienze di Trento unveils one of the lesser-known sides of the famous scientist: the one related to adaptations in the plant world. The programme, remodelled for online use, consists of four talks reflecting on the social life of trees and herbaceous plants.

Every year on 12 February, museums, universities and scientific institutions all over the world commemorate Charles Darwin's birth with lectures, activities and events.

The event on Friday 12 February 2021, from 18.00 to 19.00 live on Facebook (link to follow here  ), will focus on the plants, with their adaptations and evolutionary peculiarities.

The theme of botany proposed by MUSE for the "Darwin Day 2021", at the centre of the Science Museum's 2020/2021 programme, underlines the urgency of ecological transition and is at the heart of its two new temporary exhibitions - "Tree Time - Art and science for a new alliance with nature"  and "Forest Frame - The forest between dream and reality"  - and of the art installation "Trees Falling in Love" , located in the museum garden.

The English naturalist's botanical work will be explored in a modern key, and the exhibition "Tree Time - Art and science for a new alliance with nature" (that can be visited until 30 May 2021) will be the setting for talks by four MUSE experts who will present curious adaptations and new discoveries related to the fascinating world of plants.

Helen Catherine Wiesinger will talk about "Piante in amore" ("Plants in love") and about their original reproductive mechanisms; Andrea Bianchi will focus on the relationships between plants and insects in "Ti amo, ti odio e talvolta ti mangio" ("I love you, I hate you and sometimes I eat you"); Costantino Bonomi will talk about the root net with which plant ecosystems "talk" to each other in "La voce degli alberi. La rete di (tele)comunicazione tra gli alberi e la sua evoluzione" ("The voice of trees. (Tele)communication network between trees and its evolution"); Osvaldo Negra will focus on plant mobility in his talk entitled "Piante in movimento: strategie per ovviare all’immobilità" ("Plants in motion: strategies to overcome immobility").

The live broadcast, during which you can ask questions and leave your comments in the chat, will be transmitted at 18.00 on the MUSE Facebook page.

On the other hand, for children and their families, "MUSE a piccoli passi" ("MUSE small steps") are live guided tours to discover the museum rooms from home at 16.30. On the occasion of the Darwin Day, the event will be dedicated to the museum Tropical Greenhouse and to the particular adaptations of the plants that inhabit it.
