exhibition

The Archivio del ’900 conserves hundreds of Italian and international periodicals that document the centrality of experimental periodical publishing in artistic practices of the twentieth century, from the historical avant-gardes to the contemporary scene. A selection of this extraordinary legacy, including some extremely rare examples, has been digitised under the FIRB Project called Spreading visual culture: contemporary art through periodicals, archives and illustrations, developed by the Universities of Udine, Siena, Genoa and the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa.
Available via the Capti portal , the titles offer an overview of much of the artistic research of the twentieth century in Italy and abroad. These include “Il Gesto” (1955-1959), linked to the Arte nucleare movement, “L’esperienza moderna” (1957-1959) by Gastone Novelli and Achille Perilli, “Azimuth” (1959-1960) by Enrico Castellani and Piero Manzoni, “Appia Antica” (1959-1960) by Emilio Villa, “Documento Sud” (1959 -1961) by Luigi Castellano, “Quaderno” (1962) by Mario Diacono and Stelio Maria Martini, and “Linea Sud” (1963-1967) by Enrico Bugli, Luciano Caruso, Luigi Castellano, Mario Persico and Stelio Maria Martini.
Numerous documents from the personal archives of the exponents of experimental publishing of the twentieth century, such as Enrico Baj and Stelio Maria Martini, are on display; these include: letters, literary works, manuscripts and preparatory typescripts, original photographs and mock-ups as well as materials mid-way between document and work of art.
