Grezler’s Choices. Ancient works of the Itas collection at the Caldes Castle
A tribute to this important collector with a new exhibition meant to enhance his collection

During this summer, visitors to the Caldes Castle will have the chance to enjoy many paintings of the Grezler’s collection.
The exhibition “Grezler’s Choices. Ancient works of the Itas collection”, curated by Francesca de Gramatica and Francesca Jurman, is a tribute to Claudio Grezler, known in Trento as President (for nearly two decades) of the ITAS Insurance Institute of Trentino Alto Adige. He was a great lover of art and his passion of his led him to acquire a rich collection of paintings by Italian and Flemish artists of the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, among which are outstanding works of the sacred and profane, portraits, battles, landscapes.
After his death, according to his will, Grezler’s painting collection was included in the art collection of the ITAS Insurance Institute, and it was shown to the public since 1989 at the Buonconsiglio Castle. Claudio Grezler wished in fact that his collection, built "with time, effort and sacrifice", wouldn’t be lost, but that it could become everyone's heritage.
After being carefully restored and examined and showcased at the Buonconsiglio Castle until recently, here are Grezler’s choices, together with other valuable paintings owned by the ITAS Insurance Institute, which Grezler himself contributed to enrich during the years of his presidency.
Grezler used to buy paintings according to an aesthetic criteria: he didn’t just collect portraits, landcapes or religious subjects; he preferred Italian artists, mainly of the Venetian area, but he also loved the Flemish ones, whom he considered to be the best classical figurative painters.
