La Traviata, opera in three acts by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi (libretto in Italian by Francesco Maria Piave) is based upon the 1852 play by Alexandre Dumas fils (La Dame aux camélias). La traviata means “the fallen woman” or “the one who goes astray” and refers to the main character, Violetta Valéry, a courtesan. It is considered part of a so-called "popular trilogy" by Verdi, together with Il trovatore and Rigoletto. It was partly composed in the villa of the Ricordi publishers in Cadenabbia, on Lake Como.

The first performance took place at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice on 6 March 1853 but, perhaps because of its unsatisfying performers and - probably - because of the subject (which was considered obscene at the time), it did not have the success that Verdi expected.

The opera was was then performed on 6 May 1854 in Venice at the Teatro San Benedetto in a re-worked version and with more valid performers, such as Maria Spezia Aldighieri; it was conducted by the composer, so finally it received well-deserved success.

Because of critics of the bourgeois society, the opera was reworked by censorship and staged with some pieces which had been totally distorted in the theaters of Florence, Bologna, Parma, Naples and Rome. Its chronological setting was also changed: the nineteenth century instead of the eighteenth century.
