The work of composer John Tavener, The Protecting Veil is a ritual in music, an icon of colours articulated by a cello and a string orchestra. This is an immersion in the traditions of the Eastern Church and the iconography inspired by the life of Mary and the feast of the Protection of the Mother of God. The atmospheric church of San Vigilio is the setting for Tavener’s music with its links to Byzantine customs, intense, mesmerizing, and the sidereal atmosphere of Arvo Pärt’s “Orient-Occident”.
