The idea of working on the theatrical piece "Maria Stuarda" ("Mary Stuart") by Dacia Maraini arose from a tragic crime: Marielle Franco, a Brazilian political activist, was elected with more than forty-six thousand votes. Member of the Rio de Janeiro City Council, she was murdered on 14 March 2018. This event shook public opinion globally.

What was most shocking and ignoble were the statements made by some fellow politicians and state representatives to the detriment of the woman, more than of her political dimension.

In Maraini's work, through the two historical characters of Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I, an attempt is made to underline the obvious opposition of the same power, but also the difficulty of being women bound by ties of blood and affection: women who fight for their own religious and political choices.

Like Marielle Franco, the two queens are women whose bodies become a 'political body' with which to face the world and fight for the rights of all people, against all violence and discrimination.
