Emma Dante

Drama

After shocking Trentino's audiences with the nudity of Bestie di scena (Stage beasts), and then enchanting them with the fairy tale of "La scortecata", the Sicilian queen of the Italian theatre, Emma Dante, is back in Trento.

Currently considered the most important playwright in Italy (she has received numerous awards in her career, including four Ubu Prizes), Emma Dante presents herself to the public with her theatre inhabited by characters on the edge and marginalised, with the expressive force of her actors' body movements, use of the Sicilian language, and her great attention to family issues. These elements are also easily traceable in her latest work, Misericordia (Mercy).

The Palermo-born director stages the story of a complex family history. A one-act play centred on three women (Anna, Nuzza and Bettina) who live in a hovel with Arturo, a disabled boy; they knit by day and sell their sagging bodies by night.
