Pink is life. The boldest colour in modern art
On the occasion of Giro d’Italia 101, Mart is coloured rose pink! The protagonists of the special exhibition event: Marcel Duchamp and his alter ego Rrose Sélavy
The Mart Museum welcomes the Giro d’Italia , in Rovereto on 22 May, with a project inspired by Marcel Duchamp (Blainville, Rouen, 1887 - Neuilly-sur-Seine 1968).
In the foyer on the first floor, on a wall specially painted pink, a photograph by Man Ray portrays Duchamp dressed as Rrose Sélavy, the French artist’s female heteronym. Duchamp assumed the identity of Sélavy on numerous occasions, making his alter ego a work in her own right, and he signed some of his works with that name. From the early 1920s, Rrose Sélavy (in other words, Duchamp en travesti) was the protagonist of a famous and successful series of photographs taken by Man Ray.
An expression of the inclination towards irony and ambiguity that characterises Duchamp’s entire research, Rrose Sélavy sums up an attitude towards life in an audacious play on words: the name, in fact, sounds like “eros c’est la vie” (“eros is life”).
In line with this spirit, the Museum once again interprets the range of possible references prompted by the linguistic assonances. In Rovereto Rrose Sélavy, that is “rose c’est la vie” (“pink is life”), becomes a homage to the colour of the Giro d’Italia.
