Risvegli Awakenings is an intense and outspoken photographic reportage by Stefano Schirato. It’s the visual narration of a group of Covid-19 survivors, treated in the intensive care unit of the Santo Spirito hospital in Pescara (Abruzzo) when Italy was inside the nightmare of the pandemic.
This patients allowed Stefano Schirato and the journalist Jenny Pacini to enter in their hospital rooms, to capture the reality of the objects, moments and therapies they underwent, to witness the hopes and fears of their relatives, the suffering as well as the joy of their return to life. Their awakening from coma.
The Risvegli Awakenings exhibition arise from the desire to remember, to give voice to the people who have been affected by the virus, who risked their lives and managed to save themselves. The more than 30 photographs in the exhibition are accompanied by the audio of the interviews collected by Jenny Pacini, who has recorded their tired, hoarse, strong voices. Images and sound come together in a multimedia projection in one of the Museum's rooms. The photos tell the stories of these patients in the different stages of their journey. Stories of universal value, which may have been documented in any other country in the world affected by the pandemic.
