Silenzio/Silence

Silenzio / Silence is based on the short story Convalescence by South Korean writer Han Kang. The story tells of the metamorphosis into a plant of a woman trying to escape modern civilisation.

Composer Anna Sowa and librettist Martina Badiluzzi set this musical theatre work - the project was the winner of the Fringe musical theatre competition - in the waiting room of a television studio that the main character, Linda, is cleaning. While Linda sings and dances, three musicians enter the room.

None of the three are happy, they all feel they do not have enough room. It is only when they start playing, almost by accident, that a compact whole is created around Linda's singing.

The concept behind Anna Sowa's musical creation for Silenzio / Silence is the idea of playing with conventions by means of instrumental and electronic fragments that create a contemporary musical language in constant movement.

Transitions between different musical styles and a wealth of new inputs are peculiar features of Sowa's work.
