The Government Inspector

Rocco Papaleo stars in Nikolai Gogol's 'The Government Inspector', one of the greatest masterpieces of the Russian drama. One of the funniest satirical comedies ever written, 'The Government Inspector' mocks the moral pettiness of those in power who consider themselves untouchable.
Written in 1836, but tragically more topical than one can imagine, it is revived today thanks to Leo Muscato's direction.
Corrupt, profiteers, exploiters, the inhabitants of the small town in tsarist Russia are caught in the snare of their own deceit. A comedy in which the roguery, deceit and lack of good faith on the part of the protagonist and the other characters emerge.
'The Government Inspector' is an emblematic expression of the Gogolian theatre and its attempt to denounce, through laughter and comedy, the corrupt bureaucracy of Tsarist Russia and the injustice and abuse that dominate existence.
It is not man who is evil - it is society that makes him so.
