The Hell of Treblinka

Ziganoff Jazzmer Band; reading by Denis Fontanari

second and third episodes

Music

The Hell of Treblinka by Vasily Grossman (Adelphi) is a shocking account of the Nazi-designed factory of death.

Here, prisoners were held for a day, or just a handful of hours.

Grossman's account is meticulous, leaving nothing out. From the bare and crude procedures, through the episodes of violence, to hypotheses: what did the glassy eyes see before dying? Childhood scenes? The horror of awareness? The SS sneer?

Or maybe the happy moments of their lives? The author's eye seems cold because it gives us details we would not like to know, but at the same time we perceive all his dismay and... even his optimism, despite the horror.
