The Matter of Form

Focus | Panza di Biumo Collection

exhibition

The Panza di Biumo Collection is returning to the Mart. On this occasion the museum’s focus will involve taking a closer look at the works assembled by a man who can be considered one of the world’s most important collectors: Giuseppe Panza di Biumo (1923-2010).

Centring on works produced by the post-minimalist and organic currents in art, the exhibition documents the attention paid by contemporary languages to the expressive properties of material. It does so by exploring some of its most intimate values: the insubstantiality of light in the works of Ettore Spalletti and Larry Bell, the concreteness of cast iron and cement in those of Roni Horn and Hubert Kiecol, the physicality of wax in the sculptures of Lawrence Carroll, the spirituality of gold leaf in the work of Jan Vercruysse and the apparent fragility of nature in the compositions of Christiane Löhr
The exhibition is punctuated by the words of Giuseppe Panza, whose writings accompany visitors on their discovery of the works and the artists present in the collection. It is intended to hold a dialogue with the permanent display of the Mart, where room has now been found for the minimalist and conceptual works from the Panza Collection.
