The art of the wreck. The Raft of the Medusa by Théodore Géricault
Conference-show by Duccio Canestrini

The Raft of the Medusa (“Le radeau de la Méduse”, 1819) is an over-life-size painting that depicts a moment from the aftermath of the wreck of the French naval frigate Méduse, which ran aground off the coast of today's Mauritania on 2 July 1816.
Kept at the Louvre in Paris, this masterpiece attracts tourists from all over the world, and it's an evocative and still very symbolic icon.
The conference-show by anthropologist Duccio Canestrini tells us about the colonial background and the historical facts that were crucial for the composition of the painting. It also presents caricatures, parodies, inspirations, as well as pictorial, advertising, comic-book reproductions, cinematographic and theatrical adaptations of the work
