Entertaining, educating, moving. The figurative arts after the Council of Trento
With Domizio Cattoi
The aim of the videoconference is to investigate the repercussions of the decree of the Council of Trento - issued in 1563 - on images intended for places of worship and their subsequent figurative production. In an attempt to deal with the harsh criticism of the cultural use of images by the Protestant world, the Council established some general principles regarding the characteristics of the representations to be exhibited in churches. These new demands urged artists to test new iconographic models and to experiment with new expressive formulas suited to the devotional needs of the Church.
