Unarmed bodies: surviving the war

Unarmed, fierce, disheartened, tensely waiting, wounded, lost in hope, organised, sheltered, humiliated, and surviving: these are underlying concepts of the exhibition Unarmed Bodies: Surviving the War . The exhibition aims to open visitors’ eyes to the psychological and physical conditions experienced during the First World War by millions of soldiers. The scope is to examine the phases during and after the conflict without emphasising any particular national affiliations.
The exhibition itinerary is designed to lay bare the errors and horrors of war, allowing objects, and in particular pictures, to tell the story.
The images were obtained from many sources (including the Austrian and Italian Red Cross), but in particular from private collectors in Brentonico, a sign of how the memory of the Great War continues to exert an extraordinary influence on the perception and representation of the last century, even in the smallest places. Other pictures were mostly selected from the collections of the Fondazione Museo Storico del Trentino thanks to years of donations and extensive research.
