"VIVERE IN ALTO" ("Living in the mountains"). Men and mountains by Magnum photographers. From Robert Capa to Steve McCurry

This summer, starting from the majestic Castle of Caldes and reaching high altitude paths, the great photography of Magnum Photos will accompany guests and photography enthusiasts who choose the spectacular valley of Trentino at the foot of the Adamello Presanella, Ortles Cevedale and Brenta Dolomites groups.

A spectacular initiative that will make this area a place to host the great masters of international photography.

The original project developed by Suazes with Magnum Photos together with the Castello del Buonconsiglio, monuments and provincial collections and promoted by the Tourist boards of  Val di Sole, Peio and Rabbi, the Municipality of Caldes, and with the endorsement of the Autonomous Province of Trento, proposes in the centuries-old rooms of the Caldes Castle "VIVERE IN ALTO" ("Living in the mountains"). Men and mountains by Magnum photographers. From Robert Capa to Steve McCurry, a large exhibition dedicated to photographs with the theme of mountains and the people who live them. The exhibition will open on 17 June and end on 6 November.

The absolute protagonist will therefore be the mountain observed, experienced and recounted by the great interpreters of the Magnum Photos Agency: Steve McCurry, Robert Capa, Werner Bischof, Elliott Erwitt, George Rodger, Herberst List, Martin Parr, Eve Arnold, Ferdinando Scianna and others. From the historic photographs of the 1950s to the present day.

Last summer, the association with Magnum Photos had produced the successful exhibition “Vite di corsa. La bicicletta e i fotografi di Magnum. Da Robert Capa ad Alex Majoli" ('Racing Lives. The bicycle and the photographers of Magnum. From Robert Capa to Alex Majoli'), which espoused the extraordinary vocation of this territory towards cycling: in fact, it should be noted that in 2021, the Mountain Bike World Championships and the Cyclocross World Cup were held in Val di Sole.

The exciting images that will be collected in the "VIVERE ALTO" exhibition inside Castel Caldes will offer the opportunity to observe the mountains through the direct experiences of the photographers of the famous Magnum Photos Agency.

But what makes the 'Valley of Photography 2022' proposal truly unique is also the residency project that will come to life in the coming weeks. In fact, a commission has been awarded to the famous photographer Paolo Pellegrin, also a Magnum Agency author, to create a new reading of extraordinary intensity of the mountains and communities of the Val di Sole.

From this reportage, starting in June, photographs will be selected to be installed in large eco-sustainable outdoor structures, which will trace the 'Path of Photography', the first Italian project of its kind realised in the mountains, distributed along the trails, in the 'malghe' (shepherd's huts) and in the mountain huts of Val di Sole.
