INTERIM MEASURE (Temporary measure)

Five months have gone by since the Teatro Sociale hosted its last performance open to the public. Five months of forced closure. In this period of uncertainty and emptiness, however, the Centro Servizi Culturali Santa Chiara wanted to send out a signal by hosting a work by artist Anna Scalfi Eghenter inside the theatre, which proposes a new "temporary measure" justified by the emergency period.

From the first days of the pandemic, supermarkets were the place where people could satisfy their essential needs, the place that symbolised a possible continuity. For more than a year, safety measures have included the closure of theatres, the suspension of live performances, to the detriment of cultural enjoyment and of the recognition of an entire sector: its non-essentiality has been effectively decreed.

The “Interim Measure” (Temporary measure) project (2021) by Anna Scalfi Eghenter is a theatrical machine that is activated in the allowed live performance-mode when no audience is permitted to enter the theatre spaces. The device consists in setting up a supermarket in the spaces of a theater, in full compliance with the safety measures required.

The continuing health emergency and the tightening of security measures in recent months have prevented the possibility of opening a functioning supermarket as a work inside a cultural space.

The supermarket is nevertheless inaugurated on 20 April 2021, although it is still inaccessible to the public, as a strenuous attempt to activate a live practice granted inside a theatre by appealing to the arts and jurisprudence.

Interim Measure celebrates the total impossibility of accessing cultural spaces and of activating the organization of the entire cultural sector, regardless of the service provided in safety.
