One of the founders of the important art movement Objective Abstraction, featured in a Mart exhibition in 2015, Gianni Pellegrini (1953) returns to the Galleria Civica with a solo exhibition presenting the latest developments in his pictorial quest. Mostly unpublished or created specially for the occasion, Pellegrini’s recent canvases continue the exploration of light and colour that has characterized his art since his debut in the 1970s. The exhibition provides visitors a deep appreciation of the tireless pursuits of one of the outstanding figures in the Tridentine arts scene while reaffirming the cultural vocation of the Galleria Civica and its bond with the local area.

The Mart heritage covers more than 150 years in the history of Italian and international art with a particular emphasis on the 20th century and its many souls: the avant-garde movements and Futurism, archaisms and metaphysics, the upheavals in the second half of the century and contemporary experimentations. Occupying two floors, this pathway through art history continues to grow and develop.

Thanks to frequent additions, rotations, and Focus exhibitions, visitors will always find something new and different at Mart. Two novel juxtapositions of major artists will open to the public in autumn 2019: Gino Rossi and Arturo Martini on 4 October; Bernardo Strozzi and Yves Klein on 25 October.

GIANNI PELLEGRINI Semblances in my eyes

Galleria Civica Trento, 21.09.2019 — 26.01.2020

Mart presents the most complete exhibition ever organized in Europe dedicated to Richard Artschwager (1923-2013). This major international project is entrusted to the curator Germano Celant in collaboration with the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, which will host the exhibition this coming spring. Seeking to grasp space, everyday objects, and perception, Artschwager’s art represents an unicum in 20th-century art. Developing chronologically, the survey exhibition highlights the seminal nuclei of an artistic quest extending from the 1950s into the new millennium. Curated by Margherita de Pilati.

FOCUS COLLECTIONS

Mart Rovereto, from 04.10.2019; from 25.10.2019

Mart will host the first exhibition in Italy dedicated to the American dancer and cultural icon Isadora Duncan (1877-1927). Rebellious and charismatic, a true diva, she went beyond the canons of romantic ballet to develop an independent style and technique. Central themes in the exhibition are the liberation of women’s bodies, Duncan’s influence on early 20th-century culture, and her bond with Italy. The exhibition features numerous major artists who portrayed or were inspired by Duncan: Rodin, Bourdelle, Stuck, Zandomeneghi, Sartorio, Bistolfi, Baccarini, De Carolis, Chini, Cambellotti, Nonni, Boccioni, Depero, Severini, Casorati, Campigli, Sironi, Raphaël, and Gio Ponti.

RICHARD ARTSCHWAGER

Mart Rovereto, 12.10.2019 — 02.02.2020

The exhibition examines the relationship between art and music in the 20th century, comparing specific historical periods. It begins with the Futurists’ exploration of sound, from the manifestos of Russolo and Pratella to Depero’s onomalinguistic works. Starting from the futurist spark, the exhibition moves on to explore the noise music of the second half of the century, including Sound Poetry and experimental music. The works of art on exhibit — from Veronesi to Chiari by way of Kandinsky’s watercolours and on to the contemporary artists Spanghero and Mazzonelli — dialogue with materials from the Mart Archivio del ’900: graphic works, documents, artists’ books, phonograph records, posters, videos, and audio recordings. Curated by Germano Celant Exhibition co-organized by Mart and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

DANCING THE REVOLUTION Isadora Duncan and the figurative arts in Italy between the 19th century and avant-garde

Mart Rovereto, 19.10.2019 — 01.03.2020

Words and images in 20th-century art represent the core of art collector Paolo Della Grazia's Archivio di Nuova Scrittura. In 1988 Della Grazia chose to place his collection at Mart of Rovereto and Museion of Bolzano to better ensure its access to scholars and the public. It is now featured in the double exhibition Intermedia, consisting of a different complementary section in each of the two museums. Mart, which manages the Archive's impressive bibliographical and archival documentation, proposes a focus on experimental magazines and a small tribute to the magazine “Lotta poetica” and its exponents Sarenco, De Vree, Miccini, and Arias-Misson. Curated by Maria Flora Giubilei and Carlo Sisi with Rossella Campana, Eleonora Barbara Nomellini and Patrizia Veroli.
