Twenty years after his death, this exhibition celebrates the cultural legacy of Flavio Faganello, highlighting the different aspects of an authorial vision intimately connected to the practice of trekking.
A selection of over one hundred photographs conveys a method and a glimpse that anticipate themes and contemporary sensibilities, inviting people who love walking, traveling and slow tourism to re-discover paths and social contexts of a world where history was knocking at the door.
By virtually recomposing his extraordinary archive, nowadays divided between his family and the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano, the selection documents the epochal environmental and anthropological transformations of the regional territory in the era of economic boom and tourist expansion.
Icastic images recall the close connection between the shapes of the landscape and the life of mountain peasant societies, their cultural heritage, the expressions of spirituality. Along ancient paths, with their unmistakable morphology of crosses, fences, votive shrines, dry stone artifacts, Faganello grasps the hardships of work, the forms of sociality, the peculiar relationship between people and sacred spaces, thus capturing rites, traditions, faith and hopes of the wandering pilgrims. In his continuous returns, to the same places and among the same people, the photographer distills, with characteristic irony, the paradoxes and schizophrenias of the times, also dealing with the topics of tourist invasion and environmental risk.
The project also extends itself to the relationship between Faganello and the backthen Mountain and Exploration Festival "Città di Trento", centered on a dedicated scenography that will be staged within the setting of Piazza Duomo on the occasion of the Trento Film Festival, 73rd edition.
Enriched by a cycle of meetings, guided tours and events, this proposal brings about the dialogue between the past and the possible futures of a community which, in Faganello's tireless visual research, continues, profoundly, to recognize and identify itself.
