Castelfondo castle

Castelfondo castle, built in the 12th century, rises on a rock spur towering above the village, in an unexpected position compared to the one of most medieval fortifications; as a result, this castle most probably had a function of refuge rather than of control

Castelfondo castle has got Roman origins and has been constructed in order to protect the village from barbaric assaults. Surrounded by a dense forest, it rises on a rock spur towering above the village. Once upon a time the castle was one of the main venues for events in the valley. From the 14th century several residential buildings have been added to the main tower. In this way the castle territory became larger and larger.
