When the Kingdom of Italy declared war on the Austro-Hungarian Empire on 24 May 1915, almost two thirds of the inhabitants of Trento had to abandon the city: their place was taken by tens of thousands of soldiers from all over the Empire.
Visitors to the exhibition will learn how the city of Trento was transformed into an enormous barracks, a fortress city governed by the military authorities, where public and private buildings were used as hospitals for soldiers; the remaining citizens saw their freedom limited and had to coexist with soldiers and prisoners, gripped by fear and subject to requisitioning by the authorities.
