Strolling around museums during the Christmas and New Year holiday period
History, art and science: here is what the museums and castles in Trentino suggest

Will it snow? Maybe not, but we like to have a margin for surprise! Museums, castles and also some forts in Trentino are ready to welcome both residents in Trento and tourists during the Christmas and New Year holiday period, so that we all won’t miss a snowy scenery for the moment…
Here is an overview of the cultural opportunities in our area: they’re rich and varied!
TRENTO
Buonconsiglio Castle, together with Thun Castle, Beseno Castle, Stenico Castle are open from Thursday 24 December to Friday 8 January (except for 25 December and 1 January).
Let us remind you of Le scelte di Grezler. Opere antiche della collezione Itas al Castello del Buonconsiglio (Grezler’s Choices. Ancient works of the Itas collection at the Buonconsiglio Castle), a collection in homage to Grezler, important collector from Trentino. After being carefully restored and examined, here are the paintings that Grezler chose, together with other valuable paintings owned by the ITAS Insurance Institute of Trentino Alto Adige, which Grezler himself contributed to enrich during the years of his presidency of ITAS.
Tridentum. Area archeologica di Palazzo Lodron - Tridentum. Archaeological site of Palazzo Lodron (closed on 25 December and 1 January)
Ostriche e vino. In cucina con gli antichi romani (Oysters and wine. In the kitchen with the Ancient Romans), interesting objects from a distant past are shown to the public for the first time.
Museo diocesano tridentino - The Tridentine diocesan museum (closed on 25 December and 1 January)
Extended until 29 February, the exhibition Mio dolce paese, dove sei? - Mon doux pays, où êtes-vous? Identità perdute da Rouault ai contemporanei (Mon doux pays, où êtes-vous? - My sweet country, where are you? Lost identities from Rouault to the contemporaries) was organised in memory of the First World War.
It lets us contemplate the contradictions of our age, the dimensions of pain - which any war causes -, discrimination and violence that go beyond our daily life. The core of the exhibition is the famous Miserere di Georges Rouault (Parigi, 1871 - 1958), a suite of 60 lithographs, now on display in Trento for the first time.
Galleria civica di Trento - Civic art gallery of Trento (always open, on 25 December and 1 January from 15.00 to 20.00)
Nature arte ed ecologia (Nature, art and ecology): through the language of contemporary art and the works of some of the greatest artists of our time, the Galleria Civica offers a study on ecology, as current as it is compelling.
Muse - Science Museum (closed on 25 December; on 1 January open from 15.00 to 19.00)
Visit the new Science Museum of Trento by architect Renzo Piano, and the exhibition Ex Africa - Esplorazioni di arte e scienza by Jonathan Kingdon (Explorations in art and science by Jonathan Kingdon) until 10 January
Le Gallerie di Piedicastello, Fondazione museo storico del Trentino - Trentino history museum foundation, the Tunnels of Piedicastello: (closed on 25 December and 1 January)
35- 45: guerre e totalitarismi in una regione di confine (35- 45: wars and totalitarianisms in a border region), an exhibition itinerary which is a sort of photographic film / picture show on display along the 300 metres of the Black Gallery.
La rivoluzione della voce (The revolution of the voice): a multimedia and interactive exhibition itinerary to discover oral sources as instruments of historiographical research in Italy.
Il quartiere Le Albere a Trento: architettura e spazi urbani ( District “Le Albere” in Trento: architecture and urban spaces): a collection of photos that make us think and raise a debate over the essence of the new district of Trento, planned by architect Renzo Piano.
Fort Cadine, Fondazione museo storico del Trentino - Trentino history museum foundation (until 6 January open everyday, except for 25 December and 1 January).
The Trentino history museum foundation offers free guided visits on Sundays at 15.00. To take part, just turn up on the courtyard outside the fort a few minutes before scheduled time.
FIAVE'
Museo delle Palafitte di Fiavé - Museum of Pile dwellings of Fiavé
In occasion of Yuletide, the Servizi educativi dell'Ufficio Beni archeologici della Soprintendenza per i beni culturali della Provincia autonoma di Trento (Office for educational activities of the Archaeological Heritage Office of the Department for Cultural Heritage - Autonomous Province of Trento) offer free guided tours of the Museo delle Palafitte di Fiavé – Museum of Pile dwellings of Fiavé - on Sunday 27 December, Wednesday 30 December, Saturday 2 January at 15.00; on Sunday 3 January, at 10.00 and 15.00.
The guided tours for max. 30 people, held by an archaeologist, have to be booked by phoning 0465 702626 (ApT Terme di Comano) not later than the day before the visit (by 18.00).
By visiting the Museo delle Palafitte di Fiavé, visitors can experience an engaging journey into the past and learn more about our ancestors’ life of the Bronze Age.
SAN MICHELE ALL’ADIGE
Museo degli usi e costumi della gente trentina - Museum of the habits and customs of the people of Trentino(closed on Monday -if not holiday-, on 25 December and 1 January)
The renovated section Viticulture, oenology and distillation (situated there where most probably the wine cellar of the ancient Augustinian monastery was located) takes visitors to the end of their visit of the museum along 42 rooms, and focuses their attention on issues that are important for the Piana Rotaliana: treating vineyards, grape processing, wine and grappa production.
ROVERETO
Mart - Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Rovereto (always open; on 25 December and 1 January: from 15.00 to 20.00)
Le Collezioni (The Collections): with the presentation of The Collections, the Mart explores over a century of history of Italian and international art. Visitors are invited to learn about the perimeters of art and go beyond them through the 20th century and its movements, and on to the experimentation of the present scene and the new media. The display project is divided into two sections: The invention of the modern and The incursion of the contemporary
La coscienza del vero. Capolavori dell’Ottocento da Courbet a Segantini (Awareness of the real. Nineteenth-century masterpieces. From Courbet to Segantini) will investigate some moments of figurative culture in the nineteenth century, in the period between Romanticism and Impressionism, or between 1840 and 1895, the year of the first Venice Biennale.

Manifesto 100. Ricostruzione futurista dell'universo (1915-2015) (Manifesto 100. Futurist Reconstruction of the Universe (1915-2015)
Museo storico italiano della Guerra - Italian war history Museum of Rovereto (closed on 21, 24, 25, 31 December 2015 and 1 January. Special opening on Monday 28 December and Monday 4 January, with usual opening times)
Donne in guerra. immagini dall’archivio fotografico del museo della guerra (Women at war. Images from the picture library of the Museo della Guerra): The space dedicated to photography in Torrione Malipiero hosts a selection of women images taken from the museum picture library.
Palazzo Alberti Poja (open from Tuesday to Sunday; closed on 25 December and 1 January)
Gli spostati. Profughi, Flüchtlinge, Uprchlíci 1914-1919 (The displaced. Refugees, Flüchtlinge, Uprchlíci 1914-1919): the exhibition tells the story of refugees from Trentino in the First World War through photos, diary entries, letters, maps, specially-created tables, paintings, along with memories from notebooks, postcards and pages of crumpled letters (there are even letters written on tree bark), as well as chests, the registers of refugee camps, and objects brought back by refugees from their exile.
RIVA DEL GARDA and ARCO
Museo Alto Garda Mag - Mag Alto Garda museum
(from 27 to 30 December: 10.00-18.00; on 31 December: 10.00-12.30; from 2 to 10 January: 10.00-18.00. Afterwards the museum is closed until March 2016).
In this period it will be possible to visit the permanent sections on the three floors, respectively dedicated to the Picture Gallery, to Archaeology and to History; furthermore, visitors can reach the top of the fortified tower to enjoy the beautiful landscape of the upper Garda, or else they can join the workshop itinerary known as ‘INvento', designed for children and their families.
Galleria civica G. Segantini - Mag - G. Segantini art gallery (closed on 25 December and 1 January, on Mondays, but open on Monday 4 January): the renewal of the Civic Gallery's exhibition, a new project and a research plan have led to Segantini e Arco (Giovanni Segantini and Arco), an exhibition/project aimed at highlighting Arco as the place of this important Italian painter.
Finally, the international outdoor exhibition of contemporary art Arte Sella (in the fields and woods of the Val di Sella, in the municipality of Borgo Valsugana) is always open and welcomes its visitors!
